Your Online Source for all Things Me

Journal Entry: Wed May 21, 2008, 8:41 AM
Here lies another example of why artistic education is not good for me. Unlike the art school I did in 2006, I found that, this time around my educators were far too lax. There is a somewhat sadistic part in me that needs someone to critique my art and tell me that it's bollocks.

In the painting classes I took, everything of everyone's was good, because all art is unique and should be praised. I only partially agree with this, but I am a snob when it comes to artists who have no interest in bettering their own technique.

So, until I can find an educational method that strikes a balance between challenging, creative and technical, (but not overly so) I will keep battling it out on my own.

That being said, I'm happy at where I am at the moment in what I'm making. However, I am struggling with finding a good method for digital art, to turn out a good stream of quality work. At the moment, about 70% of my work gets closed without being saved, because I will sink 6 hours into drawing something, and then realise that it is utter bollocks. That being said, the stuff that does make it past my internal censor is getting better, and I see an improvement in my work over the last few years, especially in the last six months or so. For quite a while, from around 2005 to mid 2007, I was concerned that even though I was churning out a fair amount of work, I wasn't actually getting any better at my craft. Now, I think I am.

That being said, my artistic productivity is fairly low, and I am struggling to find something to do with the art I am producing for myself. I think I might save up a little money and put in an application to Watt Space to get rid of some of it. That being said, I have a fair number of artworks that have not been photographed. I don't think I have photographed a traditional artwork since Christmas 2006, with the exception of in progress shots.

No great artist ever sees things as they really are. If he did, he would cease to be an artist - Oscar Wilde
